If I'm recalling correctly, there were times when the universal translators would interpret a statement one way, while someone more empathetic like Deanna Troi would have to step in to to give the real meaning of the statement. The computers and translators (and much of the time Commander Data) were all very literal. But I agree absolutely that the computers should have been able to catch nuance more naturally than what was demonstrated!
